Dear Highland Hall Community,

August is rapidly heading into September and school will begin before you know it! We trust you all have had a fun and restful summer. Here at school, we have not been resting – there has been an enormous amount of activity all over the campus. When you arrive at school, please take a moment and look at the results.

As you head up the hill, you will see the first changes at the Nursery. A classroom and all of the external walls have received a fresh coat of paint. What you won’t see is the new insulation that has been installed under the floor of the building. This will help maintain an even temperature throughout the year for our littlest students.

The most dramatic changes have occurred in the Lower School. Most of the classrooms in the courtyard have undergone major renovation. Each building that once housed three classrooms has been reconfigured to house only two, making each class 50% larger. Along with the increase in space comes new carpets, special lights and painted classroom walls. The seventh and eighth grades will move to spacious modular units south of the music room and the library will be temporarily relocated in the newly finished storage area next to the science lab.

There is ongoing work to acquire approval from the city to install the gymnasium. The Building Committee is in negotiations with a company called Sprung Structures to erect a gym that will have both sound insulation and hardwood flooring. Once the L.A. City permits and approvals are in place, it could take from two to three months to have the gym fully functional. We appreciate your patience as we continue to move through the process of making our gym a reality.

The High School has also received its share of the makeover. In order to accommodate a college counseling office and to provide more space for the high school faculty, the high school office building has been rearranged. The clay room is now part of a larger woodworking/sculptural arts room, and what used to be the clay room is now the teachers’ lounge. The high school office is now the home of the high school coordinator and both the college and school counselors.

This brings us to new members of our faculty and staff:

Preston Barker Kindergarten-7th Grade Eurythmy beginning January 09'
Kim Barrett High School Drama & English, LS & HS Singing
Ramona Budrys 1st Grade Class Teacher
Theresa Catlin Kindergarten Teacher
Corby Gallegos High School Drama/English
Heika Kosta Kindergarten Assistant
Leda Kozikowski 1st Grade Assistant
Anna Leichter Lower School Debate & High School Speech
Vanessa Mori Lower School Singing
Annie Pinckney College Counselor
Merrie Schmidt 4th Grade Class Teacher
Shari Thierry Lower School Assistant

Look for more information about these new community members in the September Lunchbox Express.

Also, both of our Nursery teachers have name changes. Sheila Hinkle is now Sheila Sandray and Angela Karaiskos is now Angela Dukich.

Plans are underway to beautify the Amestoy Street side of our property.   We are looking at plant options for vines along the chain link fence and groundcover for the strip of soil along the sidewalk. We will also receive trees from the DWP free tree program to fill in the lower parking lot area and along the Amestory side of the campus. When the weather gets a littler cooler, planting will begin and soon that area will be as lush as the campus entrance.   You will notice the containers holding the temporary gym have been removed.

The Highland Hall staff sends you best wishes for the rest of the summer.  We look forward to your return; Highland Hall is at its best when you are here.

Warm regards,

Jim Pedroja and Lynn van Schilfgaarde

Hot Lunch Info

Dear Highland Hall Families,

We are excited to be back to Highland Hall for our second year! We have enjoyed getting to know the parents, staff and especially the students! We hope to get to know and to serve more of the students this year. For those families who haven’t taken advantage of Mama’s Munchies, we hope to see you soon..

As many of you know, we have an order box in the office. There are always order forms available. You may order monthly, weekly or daily. The cost for 1st through 5th grade is still $6.00. Advanced ordering is always appreciated, however, you can order that morning. We check the box each day when we arrive, and are almost always able to fill your order. This comes in handy during rushed mornings! Certain days, such as pizza day, advanced ordering will guarantee we don’t run out!

Check the Lunchbox Express weekly newsletter or the Highland Hall website as our menu changes every 2 to 3 months. Click here for Hot Lunch page

Our 6th through 12th graders prefer to order at the window during their lunch. Many parents pre-pay weekly or monthly, so their children don’t have to worry about money on a daily basis.

Lunch is always available for adults on campus as well. Please keep us in mind for class parties, fund-raisers and school events.

We look forward to another school year at Highland Hall.
Many thanks,
Cheryl & Resa
