Pianist & Music Director Ian Axness

Ian began taking piano lessons at age 7 and attended Highland Hall for nine years, (grades 4-12.) After accompanying the 4th grade play at the piano, Ian was hooked on the performing arts and went on to perform in plays and musicals, conduct Highland Hall's high school orchestra, and occasionally play piano for Eurythmy classes.

After graduating Highland Hall in 2005, Ian attended Oberlin College where he majored in Music History/Theory and minored in Theatre. While in college he was musical director for several student and faculty productions, and had the chance to perform for composer Stephen Sondheim, who gave glowing feedback on his performance, and even emailed Ian afterwards reiterating his praise.

In 2009, after graduating from Oberlin, Ian moved to New York and began his career as a freelance music director/copyist/pianist. Last season he worked as a rehearsal pianist on Rodger and Hammerstein's Carousel at the Lincoln Center and performed at Ars Nova, Irondale, New Dramatists, and the 92nd Street Y. He enjoys living in (and discovering new parts of) Brooklyn, juggling precious time with friends and collaborators, and reading the The New Yorker.
