11th Grade Summer Assignment 2019-2020

Summer Reading:

Your student must read three books this summer. The first two books are required reading for all 11th graders:

  1. Night – Eli Wiesel (no written report)
  2. Picture of Dorian Gray - Oscar Wilde (no written report)
  3. The third book must be selected from the 11th Grade Book List. A written book report is due on the first day of English.

Everyone should remember that these are book reports, not research papers. We want to know what the student gained from reading the book, not from reading various articles online. If, for some reason, a student decides to use a source other than his/her own intelligence, the source needs to be cited, using MLA format. Otherwise, it’s plagiarism, which is a serious breach of our academic honesty policy.

Please refer to the Book Report Guidelines. Reports that do not follow the proper format – for instance, reports that are entirely summaries of the books – will be graded down. A student writing a report on a book that is not on the list will receive a lower grade (two full grades). Students must remember to be particularly careful about spelling, double spacing, and about using the correct-sized font (12-point). Students must proofread carefully. Even the most brilliant book reports will be graded down for silly errors.

Failure to turn in the book report will result in a lower grade in the next English track. Students cannot receive an A in the English track if they haven’t completed the written book report.

Third Quarter Eurythmy Track:

At Highland Hall, each grade takes three quarters of English and one quarter of eurythmy.  During the eurythmy track, students will read two books: one choice from the book list and one required book. The book report on the book of choice will be due the first day of the fourth quarter English track that follows eurythmy; the test on the required book will take place during the first week of the English track. For the 11th grade, the Eurythmy Track occurs in the third quarter.

Reading assignments for 11th grade Eurythmy Track (3rd quarter):

  1. Autobiography of Malcolm X – Malcolm X as told to Alex Haley (no written report)
  2. A book of choice from the 11th grade book list. A written book report is required.
